So I admit I am in the dark about riser bars. I have a flat bar on my hardtail, and a riser on my f/s. I am thinking about putting a riser on the hardtail for a slightly more upright riding position. Since I don't race anymore I figure I should be more comfortable when I ride. So what should I look for when purchasing a riser bar? Are they all pretty much the same besides weight?

Yeah dude, you're on the right track there. The riser bar really makes riding more comfortable. Other than weight, the big difference from one bar to another is rise, sweep, bend and diameter.
In other words, sit on a few so equipped bikes and get a feel for what you like. Downhill and freeriders usually run real fat risers that come way up and back. While some of my xc buds run skinny bars with a lower rise.
I don't like leaning way forward on the trails. It reminds me of the lycra/ leg shaving days when mountain biking was just roadies off the road. Yuck!

I just bought one from Jensonusa. I went with an XC type riser. I don't race, but things do get pretty technical, and that is the main reason I haven't had one in the past.
