So I just got back from a ride, and I have this creaking sound coming from somewhere around the cranks. I took off the cranks and reinstalled them thinking one might have come loose. Wiggled the BB and theres no play in it. Any thoughts on what it could be?? Maybe just a couple bearings in the BB??
Also on this topic any thoughts on the X-type external bottom brackets that raceface is doing? There are good deals to be had right now, and if I am going to have to replace my BB I may as well upgrade the cranks to something stiffer and lighter.

Sky:
Definitely sounds like bearings, maybe some moisture got inside the race or perhaps they're just worn.
Our Ventana X-5 test bike came equipped with Race Face Atlus cranks which were absolutely beautiful. Smooth and precise, no creaks moans or stutters.
If you are set on trying to repair your current cranks, try packing the bearings with grease. But I would definitely recommend going with Race Face, they impressed all of us over here. Hope this helps man!

What kind of riding? Drops? XC, FR, trail?
My LX M580 hollowtech II (external BB model) took LOADS of abuse and are still as perfect as they day I bought them. I moved up to XTR (couldn't beat the price) and they are basically exactly the same, just a half pound lighter.
I'd go with Shimano for cranks in a heartbeat. Not much else besides cranks and cassettes works for me, but if my picky butt will use them...

Shimano is a big NO with me. I will try almost anything but shimano. Now I know they make good stuff, but well, personal opinion.

If not shimano, I'd no hesitate to go with FSA. They make great stuff as well. I've never really been a fan of Race Face though. Never really liked the I-beam kind of design they have.
